Company History
Cooper Green Mercy Health Services was founded in 1972, originally opening as Mercy Hospital, a 319-bed acute care facility owned by Jefferson County, Alabama. In 1975, the hospital was renamed to honor W. Cooper Green, a former Birmingham mayor and Jefferson County Commission president who was instrumental in its establishment.
In 2012, the hospital closed its inpatient and emergency services due to financial constraints. It transitioned into a full-service outpatient clinic on January 1, 2013, continuing to provide primary and specialty care, urgent care, therapy services, laboratory testing, imaging, and pharmacy support to Jefferson County residents, regardless of their ability to pay.
Today, Cooper Green operates as an affiliate of the UAB Health System, maintaining its mission of delivering accessible, patient-centered care to the community.
