Job Description:
This position provides consultative services to departments, faculty, staff and University programs to ensure compliance with government regulations, such as ADA, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ASU policies. Facilitates the interactive process between department and employee to determine accommodation needs. Educates departments on the ADA and assists in facilitating return to work and appropriate accommodations.
Position Salary Range:
$57,900 - $63,000, depending on experience
Essential Duties:
Serves as principal consultant for the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) program, policies, and procedures relating to compliance and the promotion of University opportunities for faculty and staff with disabilities on all ASU campuses; works collaboratively as needed with departments regarding leaves, accommodations, employee disability, and return to work.
Interprets and assists with revision of policies and develops disability/ADA procedures relating to faculty and staff. Monitors disability/ADA procedures, and provides consultative services to departments.
Establishes processes and works towards prompt and equitable resolution of issues and inquiries from faculty, staff, and the public regarding disability compliance. Works collaboratively and consultatively with internal legal, diversity, and employee relations staff on complaints under the ADA and other applicable federal and state laws regarding discrimination on the basis of disability.
Identifies appropriate time to begin the interactive process. Opens file, maintains accurate and complete documentation of accommodation and interactive process. Assists departments in identifying essential functions.
Reviews functional limitations, assess the job requirements in conjunction with restrictions to identify any barriers that may impact employee’s ability to return to work. Provides recommendation to the department with options and solutions for accommodating.
Researches, revises, and disseminates current documentation and communications regarding state and federal laws and regulations, best practices, and University employment policies and procedures on the rights of persons with disabilities and means of providing appropriate accommodations to persons with disabilities while maintaining program performance standards.
Performs due diligence review, research, or referral regarding complaints or possible violations related to ADA regarding ADA;.
Works collaboratively with appropriate stakeholders such as legal, heath and safety, and facilities management to investigate requests for accommodations; develops recommendations and maintains records in response to identified issues/concerns to ensure equitable treatment across the University in compliance with policy and all applicable state and federal regulations and statutes.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in administration, development, and implementation of ADA, disability and/or leave programs or systems; OR; any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Strong knowledge of current federal and state laws, statutes, regulations, policies, and directives pertaining to ADA, FMLA, HIPAA, and other medical and disability practices and procedures.
Knowledge and demonstrated application of the investigative principles, practices, methods, and techniques of disability compliance.
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of continuous process improvement.
Knowledge of state of the art and “best practice” operations and programs on the rights of persons with disabilities.
Skill in computerized human resources management information systems (HRMS); Workday preferred.
Skill in data collection, research, analysis, and development of recommendations and/or alternative solutions.
Skill in developing effective written technical and employee communication and/or presentation materials.
Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders, , including interpersonal and presentation skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders in and outside the University.
Ability to apply critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills related to analysis and determining solutions.
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
Frequent move about the inside of the office building to access file cabinets and office machinery.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
Frequent communication that requires ability to receive and exchange accurate information.
