Position Information

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field, e.g., education, educational psychology, or counseling.
- Experience in higher education, especially graduate- or professional-level, working in areas such as teaching, counseling, training, and/or coaching.
- Experience in Health Professions Education or other professional degree programs
- Direct experience (knowledge, understanding), with ADA and organizing/delivering accommodations
- Direct experience with applying knowledge from the learning sciences to coaching practices
The Academic Success Programs (ASP) aim to help all University of Georgia (UGA) School of Medicine students succeed on their journey to become physicians. These programs include individualized academic counseling and coaching, large group sessions to introduce students to successful learning strategies and tactics, a robust near-peer tutoring program, and the development of materials to guide students' learning.
We seek a Learning Specialist who will report to the Director of Academic Success. This position's role will be to deliver and help refine our programming to support the academic success of students across all four years of the MD program in areas of reading, writing, time management, learning self-management, knowledge organization, clinical reasoning, and others. Additionally, the Learning Specialist will contribute to developing and improving intra- and inter-office policies and procedures that undergird the office's work with students and other offices at the School of Medicine.

Deliver, create and refine current ASP programming:
- Engage in individualized academic counseling and coaching with students within the MD program.
- Deliver and help refine ASP programs, including managing the program's calendar and providing workshops and other teaching sessions, to support both learners and program adjunct faculty members.
- Create new content that supports existing programming.
- Assist with the Peer-Assisted Learning Program, tutorial services offered by near-peers to 1st-3rd year medical students, including elements of recruitment, hiring, budgeting, advertising, accessibility, adaptability, feedback, and improvement of the program.
- Work with leadership and Director for Academic Success to develop, refine, and update on an ongoing basis, written and electronic learning materials and resources, to support student academic success at all levels of the curriculum.
- Continuously monitor published literature on new and emerging trends in national and international best practices regarding the assessment and evaluation of struggling learners, support of student academic success, and remediation strategies.
Contribute to collaborations with others on and around campus:
- Proactively work and collaborate with faculty regarding student academic progress and making decisions on formalized administrative interventions.
- In conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs, provide support and advocacy for students with accommodations and other academic needs.
- Work with leadership and Director for Academic Success to identify student needs, initiate and monitor appropriate referrals, and act as a point of contact with program adjunct faculty and/or other support services.
Contribute to the development and implementation of ASP and related policies, procedures, and processes:
- Assist with developing policies and procedures for ASP in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA and LCME guidelines and implement, interpret, and enforce the policies and procedures, in conjunction with leadership and Director for Academic Success.
- Assist with cultivating processes to monitor and document student progress and achievement across all four years of the medical education program.
- Assist with developing processes to track the delivery of support services and their outcomes.
- Assist with developing processes to evaluate ASP's effectiveness.
Other duties as assigned, e.g. participation in proctoring in-house exams delivered throughout the medical education program.
