Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the Medical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care in the clinic. Helps assist physicians with patient care procedures. Works in lab area running tests, and sending out specimens to UAB lab. May do venipuncture. Helps organize, maintain and file patient charts

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists in the performance of direct and indirect nursing care.
2. Accurately takes and records patient's vital signs and other appropriate patient observations. Reports critical values to RN/LIP.
3. Performs specific procedures per physician instructions and according to policy.
4. Administers certain PO, Subq and IM injections at physician instructions.
5. Runs in-office lab tests including finger stick blood sugars, rapid strep throat cultures, sets up wet preps and prepares gram stain slides for physician to analyze.
6. Instructions are given to the patient/family accurately and thoroughly per protocol or as directed by RN/LPN/LIP.
7. Proper channels of communication are adhered to in a courteous and cooperative manner.
8. Patients’ rights and confidentiality are consistently protected.
9. Shows a willingness to participate in improvement endeavors.


Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Position requires: High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing simple medical and laboratory procedures and EKGs. Must: (1) enter 4,000 keystrokes per hour; (2) possess basic knowledge of PC applications, software, and database management.
CCMA Certification from the National Healthcare Association (NHA). If certified by another accrediting agency, NHA certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Current CPR certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Preferred qualifications: Three years of clinical experience preferred.
